Common Grounds Coffeehouse & Café is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Whole Bean, Incorporated. Common Grounds was originally founded in November of 1997 by Pete & Kim Suter and opened in the Boehr Building at 125 North Main Street, Bluffton, Ohio.
In 2001, the Suters formed a community corporation (The Whole Bean, Inc.) and sold Common Grounds Coffeehouse & Café to the corporation. The corporation moved the business to the newly renovated, but classic 1860’s building where it remains today. The current location at 101 South Main Street, Bluffton, Ohio is literally at the center of Bluffton. It sits on the crossroads where north becomes south, and east becomes west for Bluffton streets.
The Whole Bean, Incorporated has a diverse but active shareholder base of 60 – 65 shareholders. The corporation is governed by a board of directors which meets semi-monthly. Although a for-profit institution, The Whole Bean, Inc. was not formed on the basis of profit – but instead investment in uptown Bluffton. Whole Bean investors are interested in maintaining a financially stable organization while also providing a venue for live music, visual arts, private meetings, and community interaction.
Common Grounds houses its own kitchen & bakery, a dining room, sitting area, and private meeting room. During the warmer months in Bluffton, the coffeehouse also provides a wonderful open-air dining experience on Main Street. Common Grounds Coffeehouse & Café is committed to maintaining a high-quality menu, as well as the best locally roasted coffee.
